What is a P.D.F.?

P.D.F. is an acronym for Page Description Format. A set of data formats originally developed Adobe Corporation for the purpose of specifying a document text and image content in a way that would be largely independent of particular printing devices and that would appear in the same was on any PC-based display. The format is now administered as an open standard by the International Standards Organization (ISO).
